Surface flows of granular mixtures III . Canonical model

چکیده
We present the generalization of the minimal model for surface flows of granular mixtures, proposed by Boutreux and de Gennes [ The minimal model was valid for grains differing only in their surface properties. The present model also takes into account differences in the size of the grains. We apply the model to study segregation in two-dimensional silos of mixtures of grains differing in size and/or surface properties. When the difference in size is small, the model predicts that a continuous segregation appears in the static phase during the filling of a silo. When the difference in size is wide, we take into account the segregation of the grains in the rolling phase, and the model predicts complete segregation and stratification in agreement with experimental observations.

Numerical Simulation of Granular Column Collapses with Pressure-Dependent Viscoplastic Model using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic Method
This paper presents a numerical analysis of granular column collapse phenomenon using a two-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics model and a local constitutive law proposed by Jop et al. This constitutive law, which is based on the viscoplastic behaviour of dense granular material flows, is characterized by an apparent viscosity depending both on the local strain rate and the local press...
متن کاملKinematic segregation of granular mixtures in sandpiles
We study the segregation of granular mixtures in two-dimensional silos using a recently proposed set of coupled equations for surface flows of grains. We study the thick flow regime, where the grains are segregated in the rolling phase. We incorporate this dynamical segregation process, called kinematic sieving, free-surface segregation or percolation, into the theoretical formalism and calcula...
متن کاملContinuous Avalanche Segregation of Granular Mixtures in Thin Rotating Drums
We study segregation of granular mixtures in the continuous avalanche regime (for frequencies above 1 rpm) in thin rotating drums using a continuum theory for surface flows of grains. The theory predicts profiles in agreement with experiments only when we consider a flux-dependent velocity of flowing grains. We find the segregation of species of different size and surface properties, with the s...
متن کاملCollapse of granular-liquid mixtures over rigid, inclined beds.
This work deals with the propagation of granular-liquid waves over rigid beds, originated by the sudden removal of a sluice gate in a rectangular, inclined flume. In particular, we experimentally investigate the role of the initial volume ratio of granular material-monodispersed plastic cylinders-to water, the flume width, and the bed roughness on the time evolution of the granular front. Due t...
متن کاملRheological Modeling of Macro Viscous Flows of Granular Suspension of Regular and Irregular Particles
This paper refers to complex granular-fluid mixtures involved into geophysical flows, such as debris and hyper-concentrated flows. For such phenomena, the interstitial fluids play a role when they are in the viscous regime. Referring to experiments on granular-fluid mixture carried out with pressure imposed annular shear cell, we study the rheological behaviour of dense mixture involving both s...
